Malloy Family Memories

Daddy-Moon & 12 Seconds

Monday, March 1, 2010

So, time for the second post since a few things have happened worth talking about. Several weeks ago I was talking to a friend of mine who's baby is due just a few weeks before us. On somewhat of a whim, he had decided to go with a friend out to Colorado for a long weekend for some skiing. After he told me about it, I basically invited myself on his trip...before telling Jesi. I brought it up casually in conversation with her, and she was comfortable with me going (I think), so off I went for 5 days. Fortunately, we had a connection in Telluride who had some extra beds and discounted lift tickets. It was the cheapest ski trip I've ever been on, but one of the best ever. We got about 36" of fresh powder over the 3 days we were skiing, which might only happen one or two times during the entire season. On the last day, I got to tag along with the locals, but I knew something was out of place when we got to the top of a hike-to run and I was the only one without a helmet. Luckily, I made it down with no problems and they took me on some of the less traveled terrain on the mountain which was a good adventure before Adalyn arrives.
Other interesting news has been childbirth class. We've only been to two classes so far, but we've definitely learned some important things. I have yet to put on the empathy belly, but I'm sure she'll beg me to do it tomorrow night, so don't be surprised if she posts a picture soon. Last week they explained the delivery process and different stages. Portions of the video were "animated" so everyone can understand what the baby is doing. When the instructor played the video, I was anticipating a long video, but after 12 seconds the baby emerged to which I said, "That's it? Doesn't look bad at all." Obviously I know it doesn't only take 12 seconds, but I can see how some people might get the wrong idea. We did see an actual birth, and even with them being natural births, there wasn't ever a point at which I felt like I was going to pass out. I still believe it will be completely different when it's actually us, but that leads me to the next point.
So, two of my friends have delivered their girls in the past month. Both families are doing well and everyone is healthy. Although I've only gotten to speak with one of them for a few minutes about the whole experience, it doesn't sound like it's going to be any easier than I expect, as I was told, "You will pass out." After having our tour of the hospital and rooms, I already have a plan for where I will be and how I can fall on to a couch. I'm a little intrigued after watching the natural childbirths, because according to Jesi, once she gets the epidural, none of what we saw will really be the same. I've asked her if it will be okay to laugh/joke while all this is going on, and that didn't go over too well. That was my only plan to divert my mind, so I'll have to figure out a plan B.
